In the 1900 US Federal Census for Saluda, Jefferson, Indiana, 43-year-old Indiana-born farmer Alva and his 18-year-old Indiana-born wife Carrie [Davidson] Snodgrass have been married one year and have one Indiana-born child, 11-month old John. Also in their household are Alva's mother, 74-year-old Indiana-born widow Polly [Mary Crawford] Snodgrass (who is recorded as having one living child) and Alva's nephew, 10-year-old schoolboy Vince Snodgrass (born Nov 1889). Alva owns the land he is farming, free of mortgage. Everyone, except baby John, can read, write and speak English. Mary's father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Ohio [sic]. Everyone else's parents were born in Indiana. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Saluda, Jefferson, Indiana, 64-year [sic] old Indiana-born farmer Alva and his 28-year-old Indiana-born wife Carrie [Davidson] Snodgrass have been married eleven years and have three children, all three are living. These Indiana-born children are 10-year-old John, 8-year-old Florence, and 3-year-old William H. None of the children have attended school in the past year although everyone is recorded as being able to read and write, but only Alva, Carrie and John are recorded as being able to speak English. Alva owns the land he is farming, free of mortgage. Everyone's parents are recorded as being born in Indiana.
