Both Hugh and Lida came to Kansas from Indiana. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Nevada, Ness, Kansas, 78-year-old Indiana-born Hugh and his 72-year-old Indiana-born wife Lyda [sic] [Gray] Snodgrass are living by themselves. They can read, write and speak English. Hugh has no occupation. Hugh's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Pennsylvania and Lida's father was born in Ireland [sic] and her mother in Kentucky [sic]. Living next door is 49-year-old Illinois-born farmer William and his third wife, 23-year-old Kansas-born Dana {transcribed Laura] [maiden name unknown] Guyer who have in their household William's 12-year-old Nebraska-born son Elmer [child of William's first wife Laura], William's 9-year-old Colorado-born daughter Edith [child of William's second wife Martha] and Dana's two Kansas-born children 7-year-old Nora and 6-year-old Fern. All the children have attended school in the past year. Everyone can read, write and speak English. William's parents were born in Pennsylvania, Dana's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Missouri. William's, Edith's and Nora's fathers were born in Illinois [sic] and their mothers in Kansas. Fern's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Missouri.[sic] On 23 Dec 1927, Euphemia [Snodgrass] Wray filed the following sworn statement: State of Kansas County of Ness I, Euphemia Wray of lawful age being first duly sworn deposes and says: That she is the daughter of Hugh C. Snodgrass, of Brownell, Kansas, and that the said Hugh C. Snodgrass suffered a paroletic [sic] stroke on June 13th. 1927 and was paralizd on his right side and bed fast [sic] for three months and that at that time,and [sic] since he has been feeble minded and incapable of transcating [sic] any business and that on account of the advanced age of his wife, she is not able to take care of him, and while he is not bed fast [sic] all the time it requires a constant surveillance, as he show a disposition to wander away from home when out of bed. His physical condition is such that since June 13th. 1927 he could be classed only as total disability, requiring care and attention at all times. Further deponent saith not. Retired farmer Hugh Collins Snodgrass died of apoplexy complicated by arterio sclerosis at his residence in Brownell, Ness, Kansas at 7:30 p.m. on 27 Oct 1929. He was 88-years one-month 22-days old as he was born on 5 Sep 1841 in Jefferson County, Indiana. His father was George K Snodgrass, born in Virginia, and his mother was Marion Scott, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The informant was his daughter Euphemia [Snodgrass] L Wray of Brownell, Ness, Kansas. He was buried in Brownll, Ness, Kansas on 29 Oct 1929.
