In the 1840 US Federal Census for Mountain, Crawford, Arkansas, David McCaslin has in his household two males 5 and under 10 years [James and John Wesley], one male 30 but under 40 (himself), two females under 5 years [Mary Ann and Winnie], two females 5 but under 10 [unknown], and one female 20 but under 30 (his wife Rachel Largent McCaslin). David's information is recorded on the same page as that of his brother Richard. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Jasper, Crawford, Arkansas, 45-year-old farmer David M and his 42-year-old wife Rachel [sic Rachell C Largent] McCaslin have in their household their Indiana-born sons 18-year-old James and 16-year-old John and their Arkansas-born children, 14-year-old Mary Ann, 12-year-old Winnie [Nancy], 10-year-old Amanda, 6-year-old Andrew J, 6-year-old George W, and 3-year-old William. The birth place of David and Rachell is recorded as unknown. Rachell is illiterate. James and John have attended school in the past year. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 29-year-old Indiana-born farm laborer James McCaslin owns $50 worth of personal property, but no land of value. He and his 24-year-old Missouri-born wife Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin and their 3-year-old Arkansas-born son Newton S are living with Sarah's mother 44-year-old Kentucky-born Ann J [sic] [ Jane Ann Hobaugh] Lewis and Sarah's siblings, 19-year-old Missouri-born Manverva, 13-year-old Missouri-born Retta A [Ruby Ann Henrietta], 10-year-old Arkansas-born Malinda Lee [relationship unknown], 6-year-old Arkansas-born James W Lee [relationship unknown] and Jane's brother, 46-year-old Kentucky-born [sic] wheelwright Phillip E Hobaugh who owns $100 worth of personal property. Ann Lewis has no occupation, but she own $500 worth of real estate and $433 of personal property. On 13 Jun 1862, James McCaslin enlists in Co D 1st Regiment Arkansas Cavalry as a private. He was taken prisoner in Dec 1862 and exchanged 11 Jun 1863. On 28 Feb 1863, he was on detatched duty with forage train. He spent a lot of time on detatched duty driving an ambulence. He was mustered out on 23 Aug 1865 with his company. His description is: age 32 (33 given also), height 5 ft 9 in, dark complexion and eyes, black hair, born Johnson County, Indiana and is a farmer. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 39-year-old Indiana-born farmer James McCaslin owns $1,300 worth of real estate and $200 worth of personal property. He and his 36-year-old Missouri-born wife Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 12-year-old N S [Newton Slyvester] and 7-year-old M M [Melvina Minerva]. Newton has attended school in the past year, but is recorded as being unable to write. Living next door is James' sister, 37-year-old, Arkansas-born M McCradock [sic Mary Ann McCaslin Cradduck] and her Arkansas-born sons, 8-year-old Boone [sic Daniel Boone] and 3-year-old Monroe. Mary Ann is keeping house. She has no real estate or personal property of value. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Jasper, Crawford, Arkansas, 47-year-old Indiana-born farmer James and his 46-year-old Missouri-born wife Sarah [Lewis] McCaslin [transcribed McCarlin] have in their household James' 80-year-old Kentucky-born [sic] widowed mother Rachel [sic] [Largent] McCaslin and 23-year-old Arkansas-born housekeeper Malinda Tune. Rachel and Malinda cannot read and write. James' father was born in Indiana and his mother in North Carolina; Sarah's parents were born in Tennessee; Rachel's parents were born in Kentucky; Malinda's parents were born in Arkansas. James McCaslin applied for and received an invalid pension for heart disease and senility on 13 Nov 1896. He died about two weeks later on 1 Dec 1896.
