In the 1910 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 38-year-old Indiana-born Elba L and his 38-year-old Indiana-born wife Zula [Francis] Branigin have been married fourteen years. Zula has born five children but only four are living. These four, all born in Indiana, are 12-year-old Gerald, 9-year-old Edgar, 7-year-old Roger and 8-month old Elba L Jr. The family is living at 320 Adams Street in a house that Elba owns, free of mortgage. Gerald, Edgar and Roger have attended school in the past year. Elba Sr is a lawyer in his own practice. Elba Sr, Zula and Gerald can read, write and speak English. Elba's parents were born in Indiana [sic]; Zula's parents were born in Kentucky [sic]; the children's parents were born in Indiana. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 48-year-old Indiana-born E L and his 48-year-old Indiana-born wife Zula [Francis] Branigin have in their household their Indiana-born sons, 21-year-old Gerald, 18-year-old Edgar, 17-year-old Roger and 10-year-old Elba. Gerald, Roger and Elba have attended school in the past year.The family is living on West Banta Street in a house that Elba owns, free of mortgage. Elba is a lawyer in general practice and Edgar is a telegraph operator. Everyone can read, write and speak English. They have in their household their youngest son, 20-year-old Indiana-born Elba L Jr, who has attended school in the past year. He was still serving as chair when he died five years later. " Elba L. "Babe" Branigin Law Scholarship, Franklin College, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana SCHOLARSHIP BACKGROUND The Elba L. "Babe" Branigin Law Scholarship carries the name of one person, but in a way, recognizes the achievements and hard work of two people who were important to the city of Franklin and to Franklin College. Elba Branigin was a community leader, an attorney in the city of Franklin, and was elected chair of the Franklin College Board of Trustees in 1965. He was still serving as chair when he died five years later. The scholarship in his name was established by his wife, Gene Branigin, who was also a respected member of the Franklin community. Gene Branigin was elected to the College's board of trustees in 1970 and served as chair of the student affairs committee. She was named an associate alumna in 1974. She was also a member of the city's Plan Commission and served on numerous other boards.
