Shared note
According to the 1930 US Federal Census for Minot, Ward, North Dakota, 35-year-old Elmer owned the house where the family (his wife 32-year-old Dorothy [Lowry], 9-year-old Dorothy J [Jeanette], 8-year-old Eleanor, 6-year-old Edward and 4-month old Warren) were living at 406-9th Street S.E., his personal worth was $4500, the family didn't own a radio, and he was 25 when he married his wife, Dorothy Lowry who was 22 years old. He was an engineer for a steam railroad (the Minneapolis, St Paul and Sault Ste Marie Railroad). In the 1940 US Federal Census for Harvey, Wells, North Dakota, 42-year-old, Minnesota-born widow Dorothy A [Lowry] Johnson has in her household her North Dakota-born children, 19-year-old Dorothy Jeannette, 16-year-old Edward Lowry, 10-year-old Warren Winfield, and 7-year-old Jerome Lynn. The family was living in the same house on Alder Avenue in 1935. Dorothy A has completed four years of high school as has Dorothy Jeannette. Edward has completed one year of high school. Warren has completed third grade. Jerome has completed first grade. Dorothy A is a housewife who is not looking for work. She has a source of income other than wages or salary. Dorothy Jeannette is a dental assistant in a dental office, has worked 48 hours in the past week and worked 28 weeks of the past year, earning $140. Edward is a student who is not looking for work. Social Security Number issued North Dakota Last residence Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware 19809. Obituary - Sunday 5 November 1995 Minneapolis [Minnesota] Star Tribune page B8 Johnson Warrren W., 65, of Lore Ave in Wilmington {Delaware], died Monday, October 30 in Christiana Hospital of heart disease. Mr. Johnson was born in Minot, ND., and served in the Marine Corp [sic]. He was retired from Garden Valley Nursery and had worked for Phillips Nursery. Mr. Johnson was an avid reader and collector of books. He was a board member of River Park Co-op. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Lois; Two sons, Stuart of St. Paul, MN and Timothy of San Diego, CA.; two daughters, Ann White of Woodbridge, VA and Jennifer Schlichting of Bloomington, MN.; one brother, Jerome L. of Jamestown, ND and four grandchildren. There will be no local services and burial is private. Instead of flowers the family suggests contribution to American Heart Association. Transcribed by Lois Johnson Warren's ashes were scattered into the wind at the Souris River swimming hole, Harvey, Wells, North Dakota, on 8 August 1996, the same day that his marker in family plot in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, Wells, North Dakota was dedicated. I have one thing to add and it's Warren's memory - his father's favorite song, which he used to annoy Dorothy with, was "How do you keep them down on the farm after they've seen Paree" . He'd start humming it and then singing it louder and louder. Dorothy would say, "Elmer!" very indignently. Warren went to France twice before he died (once to Paris and once to the the Alsace-Lorraine area in which his father had fought) and said he now knew why his father sang that song. Warren loved France and the French, and thought his father had, too. Lois Bishop Johnson
